How do you average daily totals from individual call records?
Sum call minutes for each date, then average those daily totals across the loaded period. Decide whether days without records belong in the denominator.
If a day has several call records, averaging the individual durations gives you the average per call. For an average daily total, first sum the minutes for each date in JOIN SHEET, then average those totals. This example produces one daily average across all recorded dates in the loaded period.
Several records can belong to one day
These fictional durations are in minutes. If your dates include times, decide whether to group by calendar day and set the column type to Date. Keep the year and month when the data spans different periods.
| Date | Assigned team | Call minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-09-01 | A | 20 |
| 2026-09-01 | B | 40 |
| 2026-09-02 | A | 30 |
Apply two summary steps
- Load Call records, select it as the result source, and open Refine results.
- Add Summarize and select Date under Group by. Change the default Summary method from Count to Sum, select Call minutes, and enter Daily call total in Output field name.
- Choose Apply and check that September 1 totals 60 minutes and September 2 totals 30. Reopen Refine results.
- Add another Summarize below the first. Leave Group by empty. Set Summary method to Average, select Daily call total, and enter Daily average in Output field name. Choose Apply.
Why the result is 45 minutes
The total is 90 minutes across two recorded dates, so the daily average is 45. Averaging the original three records gives 30. If you see 30, check that the daily summary comes first.
| Daily average |

| 45 |
Days without records are left out of this average. To include a third calendar day, add a zero-minute record only after confirming that no calls occurred. A missing record alone is not evidence of zero calls.

The question Average total duration per day in Excel Pivot table with subtotals asks for the average of daily totals in each week's subtotal. The fictional example here covers one average for the whole loaded period; it does not produce separate weekly averages.
